As a child she was raised with music all around her with gospel singer Emily "Cissy," her elder brother Michael is a songwriter and her elder half-brother is singer Gary Garland, through her mother, Houston was a first cousin of singers Dionne Warwick and Dee Dee Warwick, her godmother was Darlene Love singer and her honorary aunt was Aretha Franklin[another kid singer], whom she met at 8 when her mom took her to a recording studio. At age 11, Whitney Houston began soloist in Junior Gospel Choir at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, where she also learned to play Piano.
